Dyslexia

"Sally was extremely professional from first point of contact. I felt at ease knowing she had been through the motions of having a child with dyslexia and could relate to me on that level as well as her professional experience. I would recommend Sally in a heartbeat to anyone who was looking for an assessment for their child or themselves."

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a difficulty that primarily affects the abilities involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling, and occurs across the range of intellectual abilities.

People with dyslexia often excel at connecting ideas, thinking out of the box, 3D mapping and seeing the "big picture".

They often have the skills and abilities to excel in the fields of art, computer science, design, drama, electronics, math, mechanics, music, physics, sales and sport.

However, they are often left frustrated, underachieving and unable to show their true abilities due to their literacy difficulties.

"Sally was very professional and caring. She made me feel at ease during the assessment. She was very helpful and went out of her way to advise me how to apply for support. She kindly explained any content that we didn’t understand and pointed me in the right direction. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Thank you Sally you have made a big difference to how I was feeling. I am very grateful and would highly recommend you.”

Why Have An Assessment?

You might consider having an assessment for any of these reasons:

  • To identify strengths and challenges and enable early intervention to be put in place for children to enable them to achieve and be happy at school
  • It can allow you to have exam concessions, for example extra time, a reader or a scribe
  • At higher education you may require support or to apply for Disabled Students Allowances (DSA). The support you get depends on your individual needs and not on income. To find out more about DSA please visit gov.uk. [https://www.gov.uk/disabled-students-allowances-dsas]
  • As an adult – finding out why learning has always been difficult or a challenge
  • To apply for reasonable adjustments in the workplace

Dyslexia Assessment in Somerset

Dyslexia Assessment Process

Initially, information will be gathered from yourself and for younger people, school and family members, to establish the nature of the difficulties being experienced

Following this, an assessment is arranged. This can either be face to face in your own home, or alternatively I offer online assessments, which for some people are more convenient or comfortable and takes place on a Zoom call.

The assessment takes around 2 hours (but can be split into 2 sessions if required).

A carefully selected series of tests look at how someone learns and retains information, which provides a detailed understanding of person's strengths and challenges.

The assessments will include tests in 3 key areas:

  • General language and cognitive skills – for example visual problem solving, vocabulary and verbal reasoning
  • Core skills such as spelling, reading, writing and arithmetic
  • Particular language, memory and processing skills which are known to be associated with specific difficulties

Primarily, these assessments are focussed towards dyslexia, however if other difficulties such as dyspraxia, dyscalculia or attention/deficit (ADHD) type difficulties are identified they will be discussed in the report and possibly referrals to other professionals may be recommended as well.

The Report

The information gathered and results of the assessments will be collated to form a formal report which will also make individualised recommendations for support. A diagnosis of dyslexia will be made clear within the report should evidence be found to support this.

Reports are user friendly, clear, accessible and will be ready 2 to 3 weeks after your assessment.

"Overall experience very good. Very easy to set up and Sally was very accommodating, particularly as I had a deadline to meet. I felt very comfortable in the assessment and got the final report back very quickly. It helped me gain the extra support I needed from my university, so overall a very helpful experience."
